Preschool Program

     We have three preschool classrooms serving children ages 2 1/2 to 5 years old. Programs available are mornings or afternoons 5 days a week, and several All Day Montessori schedules. 

     As children learn and grow, they progress individually from Practical Life Exercises to Sensory Materials to Academic Materials, all within a mixed age setting. The session ends with group time. Children sit in a circle and learn about another language, listen to a story, or sing songs.

     The All Day programs incorporate Montessori principles throughout the day to enable students to enjoy and learn from their world in the classroom, at lunch, rest and outdoors.

     Lunch is a continuation of the Montessori experience. Children and teachers are seated family style, and grace and courtesy are practiced. The children serve themselves a hot, nutritious lunch and clean up afterward. Lunch is always followed by time outside. We go outside every day unless the temperature is below 20 degrees.

     Children ages 5 and 6 years old (who turn 5 by December 1) and who have previous Montessori experience are qualified to participate in the Extended Day program. This special 3rd year of Montessori preschool offers children the opportunity for leadership as well as expanding their competency, skills and knowledge. Their day begins in the mixed age group, while the last 1 1/2 hours is a unique program for the small group of older children. An academic curriculum is team taught by our Head Teachers and includes science, cultural studies and advanced mathematical and language activities. As the year progresses, the children participate in other activities away from school, such as the night walk and the campout.
