Boulder Montessori School is not just a school, it is an active community of parents, teachers, staff, and students. Boulder Montessori School supports and promotes this community through a multitude of special events throughout the school year. These activities offer parents frequent opportunities to connect with each other as well as with the school staff. Other occasions offer social and educational opportunities for both students and parents.
During the first week or two of the new school year, each class holds a picnic for their families. Parents of old and new students alike get to know one another and the teachers as they enjoy a meal and play time with children.
Back to School Night
This all-adult event features a social hour followed by a report from the Board of Directors. Parents then attend a talk by their child’s teachers followed by a brief Q&A.
Cottonwood Farm Family Day
A BMS autumn tradition for the whole family at the pumpkin patch on the Condon’s family-owned farm. Hay rides, animals, corn and hay mazes, and of course, pumpkins are all part of the fun.
Held on the Friday before Thanksgiving, this occasion features a fabulous lunch of savory soups and breads made by the toddlers for their families.
Food and Gift Drives
A special food drive for families in need before Thanksgiving encourages parents to ask their children’s help in picking out food to donate. BMS has worked with Emergency Family Assistance (EFAA), a Boulder-based food bank providing assistance to families in need as well as Mile High Montessori’s food bank, which provides food to economically challenged families with preschoolers. In addition to food drives, BMS also sponsors a holiday gift drive in December.
Take a moment in your morning to enjoy fresh coffee and pastries in the lobby. This monthly tradition provides a great opportunity to visit with other parents.
Special Guest Night
This special preschool evening occurs twice per year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Students invite a special adult guest to join them for a demonstration of one of their favorite classroom works. Children take pride in showing off new skills and knowledge!
Parent Education Nights
Twice per year, a guest speaker or one of our staff presents a child development topic of interest to parents, for example, offering specific tips on integrating Montessori’s lessons and structure at home.
Be Our Valentine
This mid-winter free event for BMS families is held at the South Boulder Recreation Center. Class parents set up stations for children to try out face painting, crafts, and dancing. There’s also plenty of space for play with balls, hula hoops and tunnels!
Parent Teacher Conferences
November and March are conference months for parents to discuss their child’s progress with their teachers.
Students spend the month of April studying the tropical rainforest, preparing hand-made decorations for their classrooms, and practicing a program of English and Spanish songs. At the end of the month, the children prepare a “rainforest dinner” including salsa, corn tortillas, and fruit salad for their families. Even the toddlers pitch in with coconut ice cream! These activities culminate in the Rainforest Dinner, where the students, parents, siblings, and staff enjoy the delicious meal, followed by a performance of the songs that the children have practiced. Proceeds from this event are donated to rainforest projects in Costa Rica and Madagascar.
End of Year Picnic
We end every year at Viele Lake with a family picnic at the park. Kids dash between picnic blankets and the playground as parents make plans to get together over the summer.
