Activities and Projects

A Sampling of Preschool Projects and Activities:

Cooking: Various food preparation activities are available for the children to participate in individually during the year. There is usually an individual snack activity for cutting an apple, carrot or other food, offered daily. In addition, children can often choose to grate cheese, juice an orange or lemon, or prepare something for the toaster oven, such as toasted bread, mini-pizza or biscuits.

Group cooking projects include preparing soups for school events, mixing bread dough for snacks, and helping with the many regional dishes we prepare for our annual Rainforest Dinner event.

Gardening: The children participate in starting seedlings, creating fences and stepping stones, and planting our gardens. Over the summer, they help water, weed, and harvest the vegetables they have grown.

Art: Each classroom has an art shelf with art tools and materials for the children's development in creative expression. Special art projects are also brought in to support learning in other areas, such as geography, awareness of other cultures, science and the academic materials.

Sewing: Preschoolers all contribute to a class quilt each year. Techniques they may use include decorating fabric with paint, hand-sewing designs, and helping an adult assemble the various parts of the quilt with a sewing machine.

Nature: We are developing more activities to strengthen the connection our children have with the natural environment. We are fortunate to have the Shanahan Trail located right next to the school. We access this trail for nature hikes, often in small groups that can pause and ponder the things they observe.
