Activities Toddlers' Classroom Activities
At this level, all our materials in the classroom are designed to meet toddlers' physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs.
Toddlers are developing in four areas: Independence, order, movement and language.
INDEPENDENCE: We help the children learn to choose work on their own, access their own cubby, and develop self-care, such as cleaning their hands and faces. When with others, we encourage the children to join in group activities, participate at line time, and to, kindly, assert themselves to other children in the classroom.
ORDER: The classroom routine, itself, helps the children develop a sense of order and predictability, and as a result, trust. In addition, each 'work' has a unique place on a specific shelf and the children are encouraged to return the 'work' to its own special place. Children are encouraged to respect the classroom environment and help take care of the room.
MOVEMENT: The toddler day is full of fine and gross motor movement. Fine motor skills include scooping, pouring, stacking, painting, and numerous other similar activities. Gross motor skills are practiced continually through running, jumping, pulling toys, sliding, swinging, and climbing - always on the move!
LANGUAGE: We use songs and books at line time to develop language skills. And there are many other activities that are equally important: having conversations, naming things (especially in books or pictures), and participating in group play.
